Week two of the 2015 Volleyball season was a fruitful one for the Seward County Lady Saints after a big come from behind road win over Colby to open league play and the tree continued to produce on Monday as Alex Wood and Kimberly Diaz were named the Jayhawk West Player and Defensive Player of the Week in a league release.
Just when it looked like the Seward County Lady Saints were dead in the water in their Jayhawk West opener Wednesday night at Colby, sophomore Alex Wood came to the rescue, and for that, earned KJCCC Player of the Week honors for week two. After just two kills in the first two sets, Wood caught fire, hammering down five kills in the third set and then eight in the fourth to help Seward tie the match before willing them to the win in the fifth. Also contributing on defense and at the service line, Wood finished the win with eight digs and three big aces for the Lady Saints.
Going up against a potent Colby attack in her first ever Jayhawk West match, freshman Kimberly Diaz showed no fear on Seward’s backline Wednesday, pulling up 18 digs and also adding a pair of clutch aces to help lead the Lady Saints to the five set win. For her efforts, Diaz was named the week two Jayhawk West Defensive Player of the Week.
The honors are both the first of Wood and Diaz’s career.
Wood and Diaz will look to keep the Lady Saints on a roll on Tuesday night as they make another long road trip to Hutchinson where they will look to upend the defending Jayhawk West Champion Blue Dragons in the Sports Arena at 6:30.
