LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Community College baseball team showed resiliency in sweeping a doubleheader from Redlands Community College with a pair of walk-off wins, 12-11 in 10 innings in the opener and 5-4 in the nightcap, Sunday at Brent Gould Field.
Seward won three of four games from Redlands and improved to 13-14 overall.
GAME ONE
Jackson Phillips drove in seven runs, including the game-winner in extra innings to help the Saints rally to a victory in the opener.
After Redlands took an 11-9 lead in the top of the 10th inning, Seward rallied with one out.
Ryan Todd doubled, Blaine Chancy was hit by a pitch, Grant Cox reached first on catcher’s interference and the bases were loaded. Phillips followed by lacing a double to center and clearing the bases to give the Saints a walk-off win.
Phillips, who had five hits, prefaced his game-winning heroics by sending the game into extra innings by homering to right field and tying in the game at 9 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Hayden Ramage finished the game to pick up the win, giving up two runs on four hits, struck out seven and walked one over four innings.
Brooks Barber, Emry Cairns and Chancy each added two hits for Seward.
GAME TWO
Seward took advantage of three Redland errors in the seventh inning to snap a 4-4 tie and gain another walk-off win in the nightcap.
With none out in the seventh, Brooks Barber and Ryan Todd reached first and second on consecutive Redland errors. Kaden Juarez followed with a bunt to load the bases. One out later, another Redland error allowed Barber to break the tie and Seward a 5-4 win.
The Cougars jumped out a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two runs in the third, but the Saints scored twice in the third and scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-3 margin.
Redland tied it up with a run in the top of the seventh before giving up the game in the bottom of the inning.
Cross Durham earned the win, allowing one run on one hit, walked one and struck out one in pitching the seventh.
Logan Tice started for the Saints, gave up three runs, one earned, on seven hits, struck out five and walked two over six innings.
Ruben Ayala went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Nathan Hopkins had a pair of hits and Colton Rowan, Juarez and Urias each drove in a run for Seward.
