Tonkawa Rallies Past Saints in Home Opener

The Tonkawa Mavericks rallied past the Seward County Saints 71-68 Monday night in the Green House.  It’s the second straight year the Mavericks won Seward’s home opener.  The Saints led by as many as 12 in the loss.

The Saints built a 29-17 lead and led 36-25 at halftime.  The Mavericks shot 32 percent in the first half but took and made higher percentage shots in the second half making 52 percent.  Seward led 48-38 before Tonkawa ripped off a 20-5 run to lead 58-53.  Seward’s 10-0 run gave SCCC a 63-58 lead.  But Tonkawa finished the game on a 13-5 run to win. Tonkawa outscored the Saints 46-32 in the second half.

Seward shot 40 percent for the game going 6-17 from three and making 63 percent of their free throws (20-32).  Tonkawa shot 42 percent making 9-23 three pointers for 39 percent including 5-11 in the second half.  The Mavericks struggled at the foul line going 12-21.

Trayon Grant-Foster was Epic Touch Player of the Game with 15 points and eight rebounds.  Dekwon Brown scored 15.  Gary Grant added 13 going 11-12 from the foul line.  Tonkawa’s Benji Nelson scored 26.

Tonkawa is 2-4 and Seward is 0-2.  The Saints host Eastern Arizona Wednesday night at 7pm in the Green House with Saints-Shootaround at 6:45 on 107.5.  Admission is free.
