Subpoenaed Dodge City Globe Reporter Fired, Claims Retaliation

(AP) – A subpoenaed western Kansas newspaper reporter has been fired just weeks after she testified in a closed inquisition about her jailhouse interview with the suspect in a murder investigation.

Dodge City Daily Globe reporter Claire O’Brien was fired Friday.

O’Brien claims the paper has been preparing to fire her since her public statements criticizing the newspaper’s corporate owners during a dispute over her legal representation.

A judge ordered her to testify about her jailhouse interview with a suspect in the case and disclose a confidential source. O’Brien refused and argued reporters should be protected against turning over such information.

Stephen Wade, group publisher for GateHouse Media Kansas, said Monday that he couldn’t comment on the matter because it was a personnel issue.
