Southwestern Heights has experience on their side. The class 3A Mustangs have 14 seniors ready to break through this season. The Mustangs returns eight starters on offense ans seven on defense from last year’s 2-7 team. The Mustangs struggled offensively at 10.8 points per game but have switched to a double wing offense and aim to feature running back Efrain Chavez more often. He averaged 21 carries a game as a sophomore two years ago.
Some of the key Mustangs are Sr. OL/LB Ivan Rascon , Sr. RB/LB Efrain Chavez, Sr. QB/S Emilio Bernabe, and Sr. OL/DL Garret Compton. Rascon had 145 tackles last season.
Matt Scripsick is in his sixth season at head coach at SWH. He is also the athletic director at the school. Playing the likes of Scott City, Cimarron, and Lakin is district and Meade and Elkhart in the Hi Plains League have made things difficult on the Mustangs. They haven’t enjoyed a winning season since 2007 and have been 2-7, 3-6, and 1-8 the past three years. But Scripsick says his seniors have taken more ownership and accountability over the program.
