Skins Get Well Against Guymon

Guymon struggled Friday night but the Liberal Redskins aren’t concerning themselves with that. After a 59-6 win over Guymon in front of a big Redskin Field crowd, LHS head coach Cliff Abbott says after the 42-20 loss to Ulysses last week, it’s been back to the basics at LHS.
"We focused on what the Redskins were," the 1980 Liberal High School graduate said after his first win as head coach. "We felt like we had a really good team that went into that first game and we still have a very good team. We need to challenge ourselves every week and get better. We need to put ’em on the fence every down. We had a real good week of practice and the kids really dug in. We went with two-a-days on Monday during the holiday. Our coaches put in the time breaking down film and there weren’t too many surprises."
The 1-1 Redskins put up 500 yards offense and feasted on eight Guymon turnovers.
Michael Sena began that trend with an interception and a 36 yard return for a touchdown 53 seconds into the game. Guymon’s Alan Williams scored on a three yard run after Guymon’s Alex Savage returned an interception 25 yards to the Liberal five. Williams amassed 134 rushing yards. A Britton Abbott three yard touchdown with 1:01 remaining in the first quarter made it 14-6. He rushed for 126 yards.
Liberal owned the first points of the second quarter with a 10 yard TD run by Isaac Gallegos. Abbott lofted a pass to high flying Trenton Hammond for a 70 yard TD at the 5:46 mark of the second quarter. Abbott would find Abbott again for an eight yard TD. LHS kicker Jesse Quintero booted a 46 yard field goal through the south goal posts to make it 38-6 at halftime.
Justin McPhail scampered 36 yards for a touchdown at the 10:26 mark to make it 45-6. Dalton Moody took it in from six yards out. A Mauricio Neal 87 yard TD run was the only score of the fourth quarter.
Liberal has won 12 in a row against the Tigers. It’s the most Liberal has scored since a 61-0 win over Valley Center two years ago.
Liberal hosts LHS graduate Ryan Cornelsen’s 2-0 Hays Indians Friday night at 7 p.m. on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net. Cornelsen is 16-4 at Hays.
