Seward County women’s soccer competed on the road Saturday in Garden City where the two teams clashed in Jayhawk conference action with five goals being scored in the first half between the two rivals with three coming from the Lady Saints which propelled them ahead for a 3-2 win and their first conference win of the 2024 season.

It did not take long for the first goal to be scored with Garden City driving down the field in the first few minutes before sinking a high rising shot into the back corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead over SCCC. Despite falling behind early, the Lady Saints remained aggressive as they stayed patient before finally finding a path to the goal as Natoya Atkinson dribbled around her defender for a perfect goal to tie up the score at 1-1.

After waiting 29:00 minutes to score their first goal of the game, it took only three more to cash in their second with Natasha Vasquez connecting in the back corner off the dime from Dayra Dinarte to put SCCC ahead 2-1. Garden City managed to lock things up with 10:00 minutes to go in the half with their second goal of the afternoon to lock things up at 2-2 but could not prevent one final goal in the first half from Seward County with Meredith Rosas connecting with a free kick that was higher than the opposing goalkeeper could reach to make the score 3-2 entering the break.

Both sides showed their power on offense in the first half and in the second half showcased their defensive capabilities as neither side gave an inch with both teams keeping their opponents far away from their goal. The Lady Saints managed to sneak past late into the second half with an attempt to score but could not make their way through the Broncbuster’s defense before time expired with Seward County grabbing a 3-2 win.

Seward County now improves to 2-2-2 on the 2024 season with a KJCCC record of 1-2-1. They will take the next week to prepare for another rivalry matchup as the Lady Saints face Dodge City at home on Redskin Field next Saturday, September 14th with kickoff scheduled for 2:00 PM.
