On Saturday the Region VI Tournament kicked off with the fifth seeded Seward County Lady Saints softball team taking on the fourth seeded Colby Trojans where SCCC got revenge from their last encounter with a 13-0 win to advance into the semifinals of the winner’s bracket but fell soon after to the number one seed in the Butler Grizzlies.

Seward County started their postseason in a big way with Aaliyah Gutierrez slamming out a solo home run on her first swing of the game to put the Lady Saints in front 1-0 which thanks to a pair of RBI doubles from Raeana Ortiz and Mollie Hardy, quickly grew to 6-0 by the end of the first.

Samantha Gomez and Alyna Frazier each added on to the hit total in the top of the fourth to help drive in another two scores to make it 8-0 and another single from Gutierrez a few batters later stretched it all the way out to 11-0. Alyssa Morgan wanted in on the fun and hammered out a double to center field to bring home Kaylin Jones and Gutierrez to make the lead even larger and ended up wrapping things up early with a 13-0 run rule win after five innings of action.

In the next round the Lady Saints were on the other side of the scoring run as Butler shot out with a 3-0 lead after the first inning before adding another three runs in the second to make it 6-0. Nine runs in the bottom of the third that saw Seward County go through three pitchers to get three outs resulted in a 15-0 deficit that the Lady Saints could never climb back from as they recorded only one hit all game in what ended in a 16-0 run rule loss in five innings.

Seward County’s championship hopes are still alive and well as the Lady Saints will face Dodge City tomorrow at 2:00 PM in the loser’s bracket as SCCC now needs to win out to have a chance at the NJCAA National Tournament.
