Liberal, Kansas – Seward County competed in what was a thriller for Lady Saints fans to watch as they took on #20 Hutchinson on Redskin Field where despite falling behind 2-0 to start the second half, SCCC was able to remain strong as Dayra Dinarteconnected on a pair of goals to end the contest in a 2-2 tie for a result against the nationally ranked Blue Dragons.
After holding each of their first three opponents of the season scoreless in the first half through the 2024 season, it took just fifteen minutes for Hutchinson to connect in the goal for a 1-0 lead despite the Lady Saints launching a flurry of shots to begin the game. Following the Blue Dragons goal, it was Seward County who remained strong as they made their way down the field past the Hutch defenders with Natoya Atkinson and Meredith Rosas finding open space to launch shots of their own but missed just outside the crossbar. With the defensive combination of Kiara Leiton, Abigail Artley, and Nicole Calderon with Miu Kameimanning the goal, the Lady Saints managed to control the Blue Dragons fire entering the halftime break trailing 1-0.
The Blue Dragons managed to slice through the SCCC lineup five minutes into the second half of action with a shot to the back corner of the goal to increase their lead to 2-0 over Seward County with 40:00 minutes to go. It took some time and patience from the Lady Saints as they maintained control as they looked for a chance to score with the first opportunity coming in the form of a penalty kick from Dayra Dinarte who launched it past the opposing goalkeeper to cut the deficit down to 2-1. With momentum on their side it was SCCC who claimed control throughout the contest as Isabelle Artley made her way down field where an emphatic shot on goal was barely knocked away by the goalkeeper with time winding down. Under ten minutes remaining the Lady Saints needed someone to step up and it was once again Dinarte who was found in open space by Rosas who launched in her second goal of the day to lock the score up at 2-2. Despite another drive down the field against the opposing Blue Dragons’ defense, the time ran out on the clock for SCCC as the matchup ended in a 2-2 draw with both sides earning a result.
Seward County now sits at 1-1-2 on the 2024 campaign after two tough top 20 opponents and will have to continue their streak of nationally ranked games against Cowley on the road this upcoming Wednesday on September 4th at 5:00 PM.
