LIBERAL, Kan. – Seward County Community College defeats Garden City Community College in a tough four-set match 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, and 25-18. The No. 15 ranked Lady Saints improve to 20-5 on the year and 9-1 in the KJCCC. Seward County also remains perfect at home with the victory, 6-0. On Saturday, the Lady Saints will travel to Great Bend, KS, to take on Barton Community College at 6:30 PM CT.
To start the match, Seward County jumped to a 10-6 lead, but the Broncbusters kept it close as they went on a 4-2 run and cut the lead down to 12-10. Garden City used a timeout as the Lady Saints took a 16-13 lead and had the momentum in their corner. With a 20-17 advantage, the Lady Saints looked to close out the first set, but the Broncbusters fought back as the set went to Seward County, 25-23.
Seward County came out with the lead and led the second set early 8-6, forcing another early Garden City timeout. It was a tough fought set once again, with neither team getting a substantial lead as the Lady Saints led 15-12. Seward County kept their lead for the remainder of the set as they went on to win the second set 25-21.
Early in the third set, the Lady Saints took control with a 9-5 advantage and looked to be in control. The Lady Saints rolled to a 17-10 lead, forcing the Bronbusters to take a timeout. After the timeout, Garden City went on a 15-5 run to win the third set, 25-23, stunning the Lady Saints. Seward County still led the match 2-1 as the match entered the fourth set.
The Broncbusters carried over their strong offense as they started the fourth set with a 4-1 advantage that forced Head Coach Geno Frugoli to use a timeout. The Lady Saints responded, and after the timeout, they were able to tie it up at 11 all. For the first time in the fourth set, the Lady Saints gained the lead 15-14 over the Broncbusters. With the home crowd behind them, Seward County closed out the fourth set 25-18 to win the match 3-1.
The Lady Saints remain tied for first place in the KJCCC with Butler Community College and Hutchinson Community College with one loss in conference action.
Seward County will travel to take on the Cougars on Saturday, with the match set to start at 6:30 PM CT.
