Seward County softball started their conference schedule on fire but lately have seen their flame drowned over the past week and a half as the Lady Saints now end their regular season schedule with two losses against the one seeded Butler Grizzlies in Towanda as both teams now prepare for the Region VI playoffs.
Butler charged in front over the Lady Saints in the opening inning with a two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead and put Seward County in a hole the rest of the game. The Grizzlies lead grew all the way to an 8-0 advantage before SCCC was finally able to round the bases as Brooklyn Castagnetta singled out to right field to bring in Samantha Gomez for Seward County’s only run of game one as they ended up falling in five innings 11-1 to Butler.
Game two was a closer battle that went all seven innings with the Grizzlies once again getting on the board first before the Lady Saints tied it up in the top of the third with Alyssa Morgan slamming out an RBI double to make it a 1-1 game. Butler grew their lead back out to three with a big home run in the fifth to put Seward County behind which SCCC trimmed back to two with Alyna Frazier knocking out a home run bomb of her own to make it 4-2. Another three scores for the Grizzlies all but sealed it entering the seventh but a final score thanks to a ground out by Raeana Ortiz to drive in Morgan made it 7-3 to end their final game of regular season action.
Seward County now falls to a 25-21 overall record in 2024 with a conference record of 19-13 in KJCCC action after falling to Butler to end their 2024 regular season schedule. The Lady Saints will now prepare to head to Dodge City on Friday to begin the Region VI Playoffs with game one being against the Colby Trojans.
