CLARENDON, Texas – Seward County softball (4-6) split Wednesday’s doubleheader with Clarendon, winning the first game, 6-4, before falling in the second, 10-4.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Lady Saints came away with eight hits, with Madeline Owen the lone Lady Saint to get multiple hits. Sage Harrison led Seward with two RBI, both coming off her fourth inning home run.

Monique Ashley (4-2) picked up the win in game one, pitching a complete game.  She struck out nine batters, while giving up four runs on seven hits, including a home run.

Following two scoreless innings to start the game, Jullian Atteberry put the Lady Saints on top first with a two-out home run to left field in the top of the third. Two straight errors put Sydney Epp on third base and Leena Mortensen on first for a chance to extend the lead.

Madeline Owen knocked Epp home with a single that got through the infield and advanced Mortensen to third base.  With the next at-bat, Kaitlin Ammermann single on a fly ball to center field to bring Mortensen home. An errant play on the ball by the center fielder pushed Owen passed home plate to complete the monster inning by the Lady Saints, giving them a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Saints got back to action in the top of the fourth.  Lexi Manyik led off with a single to left field before Sage Harrision hit her fourth home run of the year to increase the Seward lead by two.

The Bulldogs had an answer in the bottom of the forth. With two-out and one on, Kasmir Perez homered to left field to bring the game to 6-2.

The scored remained the same until the bottom of the seventh with the Bulldogs at the plate. A leadoff walk put Perez on first bases, but two straight strikeouts by Ashley appeared to put the game on ice.

The next batter hit a triple to score Perez, before Regina Garza singled to center field to make the score 6-4.  With a two-out rally in progress, Ashley forced a fly out to right field, ending the game and giving the Lady Saints the win.

A sacrifice fly by Manyik in the second inning tied the game at one.  Owen led off with a walk and Ammermann reached on an error with the next at bat.  A sacrifice bunt by Paige St. Pierre put the runners at 2nd and 3rd to make the sac fly available.

Following a single by Jasmin Marticorena and double by Mariah Miramontez, the Bulldogs retook the lead after an error by Ammermann to, scoring both runners to make it 3-1.

Clarendon kept the scoring going in the bottom of the third.  With runners at 1st and 2nd, a double-steal advanced both runners into scoring position.  A groundout back to the pitcher was enough to score the runner on third.

A leadoff single by Miramontez in the bottom of the fourth put a threat on base for the Lady Saints.  Miramontez stole 2nd and 3rd, before a ground out back to the pitcher brought her across the plate to bring the game to 5-1.

It appeared the Lady Saints would get out of a jam in the bottom of the 6th, turning a double play after back-to-back walks to open the inning.  However, a single on the next at bat, followed by a double, brought home another run.  A triple by the following batter scored the final run for the Bulldogs to make it 10-3.

Following a ground out to start the final inning, Harrison doubled to left field to give the Lady Saints some life.  A pop out by Raelyn Sanchez put the Lady Saints with two outs.  Atteberry singled to drive in Harrision to make it 10-4, but a lineout by Sydney Epp ended the game.
