LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Community College softball team continues to struggle after suffering a doubleheader loss to Barton Community College, 6-4 and 11-4, Sunday at French Family Field.

The Lady Saints have lost four games in a row and five of their last six, falling to 4-12 in the Jayhawk Conference and 10-20 overall. Seward hosts Pratt at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader on Wednesday at French Family Field.

GAME ONE

Seward fell behind early, getting into a 3-0 hole after the first inning, but battled back to tie the game in the fourth inning.

The Lady Saints cut the deficit to 3-2 after three innings on a Danica Kowalik RBI single in the second and a run-scoring single by Lynnette Hernandez in the third.

Barton added a run in the fourth inning to hold a 4-2 lead, but in the bottom of the inning, Kowalik hit a two-run homer and the game was knotted at 4.

The Lady Saints could not push ahead and were blanked the rest of the way. The Cougars scored twice in the fifth inning for a 6-4 lead and the final score.

Seward defense did not help, committing three errors and allowing four unearned runs.

Kowalik went 2-for-2 with three RBI and Kynleigh Kirby went 2-for-3.

Kirby took the loss, allowing six runs, two earned, on eight hits, striking out three and walking two in a seven-inning, complete game effort.

GAME TWO

Seward tried to keep it close, but Barton put the game away with a big inning late.

The Cougars jumped out a 7-2 advantage with four runs in the first inning and two in the second. The Lady Saints would not go away, scoring twice in the first inning on Jolee Limon‘s two-run double. Seward cut the lead to 7-4 on Jahlisa Klear‘s run-scoring single in the second inning and Limon’s RBI double in the fifth.

Barton put the game on ice, scoring four times in the sixth inning and sealing the victory.
