Seward Softball Battles Back to Split with GCCC

LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Community College softball team rallied to gain a split over Garden City Community College, falling in the opener, 6-1, and winning the second game, 5-4, Saturday at French Family Field.

The Lady Saints improved to 4-8 in the Jayhawk Conference and 10-16 overall. Seward travels to play at Dodge City at 2 and 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

 

GAME ONE

The bats for Seward were silent in the opening contest, held to only two hits.

Tayrn Golden drove in the run for the Lady Saints with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Clarissa DelLaFuente had a single to account for the other hit.

Garden City opened the scoring with a run in the first inning and added a run in the fourth to open a 2-0 lead. The game was close, but the Broncbusters padded their lead with a three-run, fifth inning for a 5-0 margin.

After Seward followed with Golden’s homer, Garden scored a run in the seventh to make the final 6-1.

Kynleigh Kirby took the loss, allowed five runs on seven hits, struck out four and walked none in five innings. Lynnette Hernandez gave up an unearned run on two hits over the final two innings, struck out two and walked none.

 

GAME TWO

Seward rallied in the sixth inning to snap a 4-4 tie and gain a split of the doubleheader.

After Garden City knotted the game with a run in the fifth inning, Seward came back to take lead and the eventual win.

Brooklynn Castagnetta led off the sixth with a single and reached second on an error. After stealing third, Hailey Michalik single home Castagnetta with the tie-breaking score.

The Broncbusters jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a three-run, first inning before the Lady Saints battled with a run in the second inning and three in the third to take a 4-3 margin.

Taryn Golden drove in the run in the second with an RBI triple while Alyssa Morgan had a two-run homer and Danica Kowalik added a run-scoring double to account for the scoring in the third.

Kynleigh Kirby went the distance to get the win, allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits, striking out three and walking two in seven innings.
