LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Community College softball team bounced back to sweep Colby Community College, posting 9-4 and 2-1 victories, in the backend of a home-and-home series at French Family Field on Monday. The Lady Saints were swept on the road by the Trojans Friday with Monday’s doubleheader, a make-up series from earlier in the season.

The Lady Saints improved to 9-19 in the Jayhawk Conference and 17-27 overall. Seward plays at Garden City on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

GAME ONE

A two-out, two-run single by Anberlin Tatum keyed a five-run inning and lifted the Lady Saints to a 9-4 win over the Trojans in the opener.

After Seward opened the scoring with an inside-the-park homer run by Taryn Golden to take a 1-0 lead, the Lady Saints kept the pressure on in the second inning. Alyssa Morgan led off with a walk and scored on Emily Lane‘s double. With one out and a pair of walks loading the bases, a Colby error allowed another run to score followed by a run-scoring groundout from Jahlisa Klear to make it 4-0. With runners on second and third and two outs, Tatum came through with a clutch single to score two more runs and cap the inning for Seward at 6-0.

The Trojans scored twice in the third inning to shave the deficit to 6-2, but the Lady Saints added two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth for a comfortable advantage at 9-2. Colby tacked on two runs in the seventh inning for the 9-4 final.

GAME TWO

Seward scored twice in the fifth inning and that was enough for a 2-1 triumph over Colby in the nightcap.

The teams were scoreless until the Lady Saints struck for two runs in the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead. Hailey Michalik led off with a walk and was pulled for pinch runner Clarissa DeLaFuente, who stole second and went to third on a Taryn Golden bunt. With two outs, DeLaFuente scored on a wild pitch to give Seward its first run. After a walk to Anberlin Tatum, Alyssa Morgan drove in Tatum with a double and added a crucial insurance run.

Colby was not done and came close, loading the bases in the seventh inning and scoring a run to cut lead in half, but Seward held on for the 2-1 win. Seward pitchers Autumn Baker-Foort and Grace Horne combined to allowed only one run on seven hits over seven innings to Colby.
