Backyard barbecues get a little easier this weekend with the return of daylight saving time and its extra hour of sunlight in the evening.

Set clocks ahead an hour before going to bed Saturday night, even though the change doesn’t occur officially until 2 a.m.

Sunday, local time. And safety experts say this also is a good time to put new batteries in smoke detectors and other warning devices.

Some parts of the country don’t observe daylight saving time. Those include Hawaii, most of Arizona, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas.

Standard time returns Nov. 6.
