Scofield Took Two Liberal Teams to State

Former Liberal boys basketball coach Dick Scofield (62) passed away Sunday due to a massive heart attack. Scofield retired from coaching last month after 40 years. Scofield has been coaching at Liberty Christian in Denton County, Texas. He also coached at Moore, Oklahoma and Sulphur Springs, Texas after his stint at Liberal. Scofield was the head coach three years at Liberal from 1975-77 leading two teams to state. The 1976 team went 18-6 and the ’77 team was 17-5. He assisted Gary Abercrombie before getting the head coaching job when Abercrombie left. He also assisted LHS football coach Noel Thomason.
