LIBERAL, Kan. — Seward County Community College’s newest facility will be named the Conestoga Innovation Center at West Campus, pending approval from the college board of trustee. The college announced the proposed name Monday at its ribbon-cutting event.
“We’re thrilled to unveil this name in recognition of our key corporate donors,” said SCCC President Brad Bennett. “The Conestoga Innovation Center at West Campus represents the essence of how the college is positioned to flourish now and in the future.”
Conestoga CEO Tom Willis said “We are proud of our investment in this Innovation Center. Conestoga has long prided itself as a driving force for the region’s prosperity through innovative thinking and the courage to do and try new things. This Innovation Center will carry that vision forward on a multitude of fronts.”
Phase I of the property at 712 N. Western provides a new home for SCCC’s rapidly expanding truck driving / CDL program, which has nearly doubled over the past year.
“We project increasing our graduates four-fold over the next 12 months,” said SCCC Vice President of Career and Technical Education, Dr. Amber Jones. “This meets demand across the nation, as well as increases within the region due to growing industry.”
Phase 2 of the former retail space will include diesel technology classrooms, conference space, adult education space, and, fittingly, innovation space.
Nick Hatcher, Conestoga investor and board member, shared his excitement about the long-range prospects for the Innovation Center, particularly in light of its location near Liberal High School. “The increased focus on CTE programming for tomorrow’s young adults means we are expanding the possibilities for more collaboration and a bright future for them, through this space,” he said.
Conestoga’s support for the project brings the total funds raised to $5.1 million.
“When we talk about collaboration and good stewardship for our community, this is what it looks like,” said Bennett.
Rock Ormiston, Conestoga investor and board member, is no stranger to projects that build a stronger economy and expand possibilities in Liberal, Seward County, and the region.
“People in this part of the world can do big things. We have the grit, the work ethic, and the sense of responsibility to our community,” Ormiston said. “Conestoga is proud to sponsor the Conestoga Innovation Center at West Campus.”
