After trailing most of the game and being down 13 at the half, the Seward County Saints gained their first conference win at the Dome in Dodge Saturday afternoon. Seward took down the Dodge City Conquistadors 93-86 in overtime. Seward trailed 41-28 at halftime but out scored the Conqs 46-33 in the second half and 19-12 in overtime for the win. Seward had already lost two KJCCC games in overtime this season at Cloud and at home with Pratt.
The Saints led early 20-17 but the Conqs rallied to lead 36-23 with 4:48 to play in the half and 41-28 Conqs at the half. Seward rallied in the second half and after trailing 56-49, trimmed the DCCC lead to 58-56. But Dodge City responded with a 10-2 run to lead 68-58 with 3:30 to play. Seward trailed 68-62 with 2:58 to play. Seward trimmed the lead to 74-71 with 34 seconds remaining. Seward trailed 74-73 with nine seconds left and possession of the ball. After two misses, Trayon Grant-Foster was fouled after a rebound underneath the basket. He missed the first free throw but made the second with .6 left to send the game to overtime. Seward never trailed in OT. SCCC built overtime leads of 82-76 with three minutes left, 85-78 with 1:23 to play, and led 91-82.
The Saints defense held the Conqs to 34 percent shooting for the game, 30 percent in the second half, and 1-10 in overtime. Seward shot 40 percent making 8-32 from three point range and 25-36 at the free throw line. Dodge was 7-28 from three and 31-43 at the foul line. Seward out-rebounded Dodge City 51-43.
Dekwon Brown was Epic Touch Player of the Game and scored 23 points with seven rebounds and a 10-10 game at the foul line. Benni Kazadi had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Taky Prosper had 14 points and seven rebounds. Muhammed Jobe scored 14.
Seward is 2-8 overall and 1-4 in the Jayhawk. Dodge City is 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the KJCCC. It’s Seward’s second straight win at Dodge City. Seward hosts defending NJCAA champ Barton Wednesday at about 7:30 on 107.5. Bank of Beaver City is the buyout sponsor.
