Wednesday afternoon the Seward County Saints men’s soccer team made the seven-hour trip to Kansas City Kansas to take on the Blue Devils to start the second half of conference action and despite scoring and early first goal, SCCC was unable to knock off KCK as the Blue Devils took the win 2-1 over Seward County.
The Saints started the first half strong against KCK as freshman forward Nate Kelly connected in the left-hand corner off a free kick to take an early 1-0 lead at the 34:00-minute mark to put the momentum on their side. Despite falling to a one-goal deficit to the Saints, the Blue Devils responded with a goal of their own to knot up the score at 1-1 with 22:00 minutes remaining in the half with the possibility of taking the lead almost becoming reality if not for some key back-to-back saves from Bruno Mestres to hold the score heading into halftime. The Saints’ defense remained strong for most of the second half, holding off the Blue Devils from taking the lead until KCK was able to sneak in a low goal to go up 2-1 and despite some close shot on goal attempts from SCCC, the Saints were not able to recover as they fell to KCK for the second time in the 2023 season.
Seward County men’s soccer now falls to 4-5-2 on their inaugural season in 2023 with a conference record of 1-5-1. They will return to action tomorrow when they take on Metropolitan in a 5:00 PM matchup in Kansas City.
