Saints Blow Out Broncbusters

Liberal, Kansas – After being on the road over the past month, being back home in Liberal was just what the doctor ordered for the Lady Saints as they connected on big swing after big swing to pulverize their opponent in Garden City and remain undefeated in Jayhawk conference action as they outscored the Broncbusters 6-2 in game one and an emphatic 22-2 run rule in game two.

Aaliyah Gutierrez was the first to score for Seward County as she stole home on a wild throw from Garden City after Noemi Tondi grounded out to shortstop which gave the Lady Saints an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. A single on a line drive by the Broncbusters drove in their first score to tie the game up before SCCC moved back ahead thanks to a perfectly executed bunt from Brooklyn Castagnetta that allowed Raeana Ortiz to reach home off a Garden City error to make the score 2-1. The Broncbusters showed some fight in the fourth with a line drive single to right field to score their second run of game one but it did not prevent the Lady Saints from connecting on some big hits with Alyna Frazier doubling out to center to drive in a pair of runs and take a 4-2 lead that Garden City could never catch up to. Two home run bombs in the fifth by Gutierrez and Alyssa Morgan grew the Seward County lead to 6-2 and thanks to some great pitching by Kamryn Martinez, SCCC finished game one of the doubleheader with a win.

Game two of the doubleheader did not last long as it only took two innings for the Lady Saints to get into run rule territory and wrap it up in five over the Broncbusters. Garden City scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the first, but it was no match for how Seward County responded as Morgan singled out to center to tie the game up and a ground ball from Anberlin O’Dell added another two to take the lead. Gutierrez made her way back to the plate for the second time in the inning and slugged out a triple that drove in three more runners around the bases to home as SCCC finished the first inning ahead 8-2. Three doubles in the second resulted in a dominant lead for the Lady Saints with a 12-2 score that put the Broncbusters in run rule territory early as Seward County kept piling on. A combination of the Lady Saints heavy hitting and crucial errors by Garden City helped add on another five scores for the green and white 17-2 at the end of the third while a single from Martinez in the bottom of the fourth drove in the final two runs of the game as the run rule was forced into effect and handed SCCC a 22-2 win to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Seward County now improves back to .500 on the 2024 season with an 8-8 overall record and remain atop of the KJCCC standings with a perfect 4-0 start in Jayhawk action. After sweeping Colby and Garden City to start conference play, the Lady Saints will now head to Great Bend to face the Barton Cougars on Wednesday in a doubleheader with game one beginning at 1:00 PM.
