The Liberal Redskin baseball team ventured to Russell to play the undefeated Russell Broncos Monday afternoon and evening. Russell took two one run tussles 2-1 and 7-6 to send the Redskins home with three straight one run losses.
In game one, Brooks Kappelmann was a part of another pitcher’s dual. The Redskins scored in the first when Aidan Schwindt singled and scored on Erek Lira’s line drive single to left center. The Broncos scored in the second. The game remained tied 1-1 until Russell scored on an error to end the game. Kappelmann (4-2) went the distance which was 6 and 1/3 innings allowing three hits and one earned run. He struck out seven. Aidan Schwindt was 3-4. Zayden Martinez tripled in the loss. Liberal out-hit Russell 6-3. Both teams had two errors a piece.
In game two, the Redskins struggled early. Russell scored six in the first and one in the second to lead 7-0. The Broncos didn’t score again. Liberal scored two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the seventh to lose by one. Liberal out-hit the Broncos 6-4 but committed two errors. Russell had one error. Brooks Kappelmann hit a solo home run to left center. Aidan Schwindt was 2-4. Landon Martinez ripped a three RBI triple to left. Marco Allonso kept Liberal in the game on the mound working four shutout innings with four strikouts.
Russell is 14-0. Liberal is 8-7 and has lost three straight. Six of Liberal’s losses have come by a combined nine runs. The Redskins host Holcomb Thursday at 4pm for their last home games of the season.
