Redskins Win WAC Track Title

Brock Kappelmann - May 12, 2017 7:22 am

Liberal wins the Western Athletic Conference track and field title.  The Redskins finished on top in Dodge City Thursday.  Here is what coach Tyson McGuire had to say.

Some risk payed off on the guys side. We jumped Austin Mullens in the Long
Jump for the first time ever to try to steal some points and he placed
second, we also sat him out of the 4×4 since we figured we could win
without him and they still won and it allowed us to put him in the 200
which he won the race.
Jesse Alvarado also was a huge shock for us in the triple jump. Coming
into the meet he was sitting 7th and he had never had a jump over 40′ and
he had 5 over that distance today to take 3rd place.
Off of the meet entries the boys were sitting in second place behind Dodge
City and only a couple points in front of Garden City, so we told the team
it was going to be whoever showed up and out competed themselves would win.

The girls started out the day a little rough and were sitting in last place
but they fought back hard on the track and passed Hays and almost caught
Great Bend. The numbers for Garden and Dodge City are currently just too
much to overcome at this time.

On the boys side this was absolutely a total team effort, we needed to stop
Garden and Dodge from scoring points in a lot of different events and they
stepped up and put themselves in great positions.

Austin Mullens was voted the Male WAC Track and Field athlete of the year,
with his impressive 2nd place long jump, 1st place 200, 1st place 110
hurdles, and 1st place 300 hurdles. The award is voted on by all the head
coaches.

The Redskin will travel to Goddard Kansas to compete in the Track and Field
Regionals hosted by Goddard Eisenhower next Friday.
