This group of boys needed this. After going winless in the WAC in football, basketball, and wrestling, the Redskins won their WAC baseball opener 14-4 over the Garden City Buffaloes Tuesday night at the National Beef Sports Complex. Liberal was advantageous as Garden City pitching walked 11 and hit three.
Garden City scored one in the first against LHS starting pitcher Brooks Kappelmann despite four strikeouts. Liberal responded with a five run second inning on two hits. Alex Schwindt walked with the bases loaded. Brooks Kappelmann was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Zayden Martinez rolled a two RBI double down the third base line. There were three walks and a HBP in the inning. The Buffaloes crept closer in the third with two runs on one two out hit to make it 5-3. But the Redskins scored four runs on two hits in the bottom of the third to lead 9-3. Marco Alonso doubled to right to lead off the inning. After two walks and an error, Brooks Kappelmann was again hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Zayden Martinez bounced an RBI single to right which got past the right fielder for an additional run. The Skins scored two in the fifth to lead 11-3. Brooks Kappelmann lined a triple over the center fielder’s head. After a walk, Erek Lira ripped a two RBI double to left center. GCHS scored one in the sixth to make it 11-4. Liberal ended the game with three in the sixth. Alex Schwindt and Aidan Schwindt singled in the inning. Kappelmann walked with the bases loaded. Zayden Martinez grounded out to drive home a run. Aidan Schwindt scored the game ending run on a wild pitch.
Liberal out hit the Buffaloes 9-4. Garden had two errors and LHS had one.
Brooks Kappelmann pitched five strong innings for the win. He struck out 11, walked two, and allowed two earned runs. Zayden Martinez was 2-3 with four RBI’s. Aidan Schwindt had two hits. Brooks Kappelmann was 1-1 with three RBI’s and a triple. Adan Mata and Alex Schwindt scored three runs a piece.
Garden City is 2-1 and 0-1 in the WAC and Liberal is 3-0 and 1-0 in the WAC. The Redskins play at Hays Friday at 4pm with Redskin Pre-game at 3:45 on 1270 and 92.3.
