Redskins Win Colby Tournament

LHS Varsity Boys’ Tennis finishes the regular season in perfect form winning all four events at the Colby Varsity Tennis Tournament on Saturday, April 30 th . Liberal took top team honors with 44 points followed by Hays with 36. Competing teams included Colby, Hays, Russell, Scott City, Ulysses, and Wakeeney. In all four events, Liberal received the top seed in bracket play.
Individual results:
#1 Singles– Duc Nguyen went 2-0 winning the Gold Medal for 1 st Place. He defeated Carl Minnix from Scott City 8-4. Then in the final match, he defeated Taylor Ermoian from Hays 8-4 to win the Gold Medal.
#2 Singles—Vince Nguyen went 2-0 in an impressive win that featured 25 aces and a Gold Medal finish. He defeated Billy Selley from Colby 8-0 in his first match. In the finals, Vince defeated Ben Glassman from Hays 8-0 to win 1 st Place.
#1 Doubles—Tony Rodriguez and Josh Hamilton went 2-0 on the day finishing in 1 st Place. They defeated Russell’s team of Berens/Boden 8-1. Then in a tough match for top honors, they defeated Hays’ McClung/McClung 8-6 to win the Gold Medal.
#2 Doubles—Ozzy Villarreal and Joseph Cotto, playing together for the first time as a doubles team, went 2-0 on the day finishing in 1 st place. They defeated Russell’s team of Nuss/Baldwin 8-1. Then in the finals with Hays, they defeated the team of Wilkens/Brown 8-2 to win the Gold Medal.
This was a warm up tournament for our W.A.C. tournament in Dodge City on Monday. Liberal will be defending their three-time conference title at 10:00 A.M. in Dodge City. Regional play begins Friday, May 6 th at Salina Central.
