Redskins Too Much for Topeka Seaman Again

Liberal’s soccer team is one step away. The Redskins are in the state soccer championship game after a 1-0 win over Topeka Seaman (14-4-3) Friday night at Kansas City Piper High School. Isai Gutierrez scored a goal in the first half and the Redskin defense did the rest.

Liberal goalie Ricardo Castro and the defense earn the shutout.

With three minutes left, Seaman had its best chance to score when Cody Scheck centered a pass in front of Liberal’s goal, with Lucas Boyd and Rivera both in position to punch it in. Goalie Ricardo Castro acted just in time, jumping off his line to pull the ball in safely.

The Skins were aggressive in the second half despite the lead. Liberal continued to attack, putting several shots over the crossbar in the second half. The Redskins also were caught offsides three times in the final 30 minutes, and the Vikings nearly made the team pay for its aggressiveness.

The 15-5 Redskins play 11-6-1 Blue Valley Saturday at 2 p.m. in the championship on B107.5 and kscbnews.net. The Tigers topped Kapaun 1-0 in double overtime.
