Redskins Sweep Holcomb at Holcomb

The Redskin baseball team was finally able to play this week, and they took advantage with a pair of wins at Holcomb High School Thursday afternoon and evening.  On a windy day with storm clouds moving off to the west and north, Liberal defeated the Holcomb Longhorns 3-0 and 9-6.  The Redskins have won 7 of their last 8.

In game one, offense was tough to come by in a pitchers dual.  Liberal scored two in the third on a Brooks Kappelmann sac fly and Zayden Martinez RBI.  LHS added a seventh inning insurance run when Brooks Kappelmann launched a triple to left center and Zayden Martinez drove him home with a RB hit.  Brooks Kappelmann improved to 4-1 going 6 and 2/3 before hitting the 105 pitch limit.  He struck out 13 and walked three while scattering four hits.  Marco Alonso was 2-4.  Zayden Martinez drove home two runs.  Landon Martinez hit a double and Brooks Kappelmann had a triple in the win.  LHS out-hit HHS 7-4.  LHS had three errors and Holcomb had two.

In game two, the Redskins and the Longhorns scored two in the first.  Holcomb took a 3-2 lead with a second inning run.  The Redskins tied it with a third inning run.  Liberal broke the game open with a five run fifth.  LHS tacked on a sixth inning run for a 9-3 lead.  Sloppy Liberal defense helped Holcomb score one in the sixth and two in the seventh.  Erek Lira relieved Zayden Martinez on the mound and pitched four shutout innings with six strikeouts and three walks.  Aiden Miramontes closed it out in the seventh.   Blayden Betts was clutch going 3-4 with five RBI’s.  Brooks Kappelmann was 3-3 with a double and three runs.  Adan Mata drove home two runs.  Zayden Martinez was 1-3 with a double and two runs.  Liberal out-hit Holcomb 9-5.  Liberal committed seven errors.

Holcomb is 11-5.  Liberal is 9-7 and hosts Southwestern Heights Monday night at 5pm for a double header.
