Redskins Sweep Great Bend to Open WAC

The Redskins are turning the tables on the Great Bend Panthers. After sweeping the Panthers last season in Liberal, the Redskins traveled to Great Bend to take two over GBHS Tuesday night at the Great Bend Sports Complex.  LHS won 11-5 and 11-7.

Liberal began game one with a bang. Cesar Burciaga ripped a two run inside the park home run to right center. Great Bend scored two in the bottom of the inning to tie it. Syris Dunlap tripled to right center with two outs in the second. He scored as Elijah McCarter reached on an error. Ericson Vasquez homered over the fence in left for a 5-2 lead. Pancho Terrazas doubled to lead off the third and scored on a Braxton Hyde sac fly for a 6-3 lead. The Panthers scored three in the third to make it 6-5 but a 4-3 double play by McCarter got the Skins off be hook. Liberal loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth and scored when Burciaga walked and Hyde hit a sac fly. They scored another on one of five Great Bend errors. Dunlap singled home an insurance run in the seventh and McCarter drove home a run. Hyde is 3-0 and pitched all seven innings for the win. He struck out six.

The Redskins got off to a strong offensive start in game two. Liberal plated two in the first after doubles by Vasquez and Burciaga and Terrazas singled them home. The Panthers scored three in the bottom of the first. LHS scored four in the second. Burciaga doubled home two and Terrazas doubled home a run and LHS had a 6-3 lead. LHS starting pitcher Brodie Warren pitched a scoreless second and Liberal tacked on four in the third for a 10-3 lead. The Skins scored two on a pair of GBHS errors before McCarter doubled home a run. Burciaga singled home a run. The Panthers scored two in the third to make it 10-5.  Ethan Green doubled home a run in the fourth for an 11-5 lead. Liberal did not score again. Javier Bojorquez pitched four solid innings allowing two runs. Burciaga was 4-5 with two doubles and three RBI’s in the win.

Liberal is 6-0 and 2-0 in the WAC. Great Bend is 2-4 and 0-2. The Redskins play at Guymon Saturday at noon.
