Wichita West did the only thing they could do. The outmatched Pioneers (7-11) packed it in on defense playing just one man up. But Liberal still got three shots into the net in a 3-0 regional championship win Thursday night at Redskin Field. The Redskins win their 11th straight and are 13-5.
Eduardo Moreno scored two goals including his first goal with 3:27 remaining before half. The Redskins wasted little time putting the game away in the second half. Jason Rios found Moreno for Liberal’s second goal five minutes into the second half. Isai Gutierrez scored at the 30:22 mark with an assist from Misael Moncayo to make it 3-0.
The Redskins play at Salina Central Tuesday. The 17-1 Mustangs drilled Emporia 7-0. Kapaun (16-3) throttled rival Bishop Carroll 7-0 and Great Bend (16-3) beat rival Hays in a shootout 3-2 after the teams were tied after four overtimes in Great Bend. Great Bend will play Kapaun. St. Thomas Aquinas (12-5), Kansas City Turner (10-8), and Topeka Seaman (13-3-1) also qualify for the quarterfinals. Blue Valley and Kansas City Harmon’s winner will also advance to the quarterfinals.
