Redskins Run Away from North

For the third time in four years, the Liberal Redskins win their opening football game.  The Skins built a 56-0 halftime lead on the way to a 70-6 win over the Wichita North Redhawks at Wichita Northwest High School.  The Redskins harrassed the Redhawks into six turnovers and intercepted five Redhawk passes.

The Redskins scored first when Xavier Porras raced up the middle 59 yards for a score at the 10:10 mark.  Landon Martinez intercepted a pass and scampered 30 yards down the left side for a touchdown.  LHS quarterback Tevin Cotter tossed a 52 yard score to Anthony Aragonez.  Tevin Cotter lofted a 38 yard TD to James Fieser at the 2:56 mark of the first quarter.  Landon Martinez intercepted another pass and raced 28 yards down the right side for a touchdown.  Martinez later recoved a fumble on the North two yard line leading to a Xavier Porras two yard score.  Andy Nguyen made a diving interception with 2:52 to play in the half.  A Xavier Porras TD made it 49-0 with 1:27 to play in the half.  But the Redskins weren’t finished.  Alex Schwindt gathered in an interception in front of the North sideline.  He followed that up with a 20 yard touchdown run for the 56-0 lead.  That was the halftime score.  The second half was played with a running clock.  Wyatt Mannel’s three yard touchdown run made it 64-0.  Adan Amador intercepted a pass over the middle.  Wyatt Mannel took a seven yard touchdown for his second score of the night and a 70-0 lead.  Kicker Horacio Casas was 7-8 kicking PAT’s.

Landon Martinez was Epic Touch Player of the Game with two interceptions for a touchdown, a fumble recovery, and a two point conversion reception.  Landon added 10 tackles including two for a loss.  Tyren Holmes had 12 tackles including four for a loss. Ayden Juarez had two tackles for loss .  Liberal held North to 28 yards.  LHS had 403 yards of offense.  Xavier Porras had eight carries for 108 yards and three touchdowns.  Alex Schwindt carried twice for 66 yards and a score.  Wyatt Mannel had four carries for 44 yards and two touchdowns.  Anthony Aragonez had three catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.  Tevin Cotter was 5-7  for 108 yards and three touchdowns.

Liberal is 1-0 and North is 0-1 after dropping their 49th straight game.  Liberal hosts Wichita South Friday night at the Gary Cornelsen Sports Complex.  Redskin Pre-game at 6 with kickoff at 7 on 1270 and 92.3.  It’s Military and First Responders Night.  Military and first responders will be admitted for free by stopping by the LHS office and picking up a ticket next week.
