Redskins Look for More After 11-7 Season

KSCB News - September 10, 2014 4:51 pm

There is nothing wrong with being 11-7. Most soccer programs would view such a season with optimism. Not at Liberal. Not in a program which has advanced to 5A’s final four in 10 of the past 12 seasons and won WAC in 11 of the last 13 seasons.

Liberal is off to a good start going 3-0 and winning the Wichita South Titan Classic beating Wichita West, Maize, and Emporia. The Redskins open WAC play at Great Bend on Thursday at 5:30.

Liberal has four returning starters from last year’s team which lost at Kapaun in the second round of the 5A playoffs. They return Sr. defender Pedro Lara, Sr. goalie Jose Alonso, So. forward Brian Alvarez, and So. forward Eliel Gonzalez.

Lori Navarro is in her 17th year as head coach and is 217-68-13 after the 3-0 start. Liberal has slumped a bit in the regular season the past two seasons going 11-7 and 4-4 in WAC last year and 11-9-1 with a 2-6 WAC record the season before. The Redskins hope to get back to the level of 16-5, 17-2, and 17-4 as they were in 2011, 2010, and 2009.

Navarro has also added to her coaching staff landing former Hays head coach Saul Hernandez and former Redskin DJ Zuniga.
