Brock Kappelmann - September 14, 2024 7:45 am

The Liberal Redskins are 2-0 for  a second straight year after an 18-6 win over the Wichita South Titans Friday night at the Gary Cornelsen Sports Complex.  Playing shorthanded due to injuries without six starters, the Angry Red defense held the Titans in check and the “X factors” Xavier Porras and Xavier Tafoya had big rushing nights.

Liberal drove the ball up and down the field in the first half, but penalties stymied the drives.  Liberal out-gained the Titans 169-49 in the first half but only led 3-0.  Horacio Casas booted a 28 yard field goal through the south upright with 4:24 to play in the half . The Skins also missed a pair of first half field goals of 32 and 47 yards.  Adan Amador recovered a fumble in the first half.

Liberal employed a “wildcat formation” with Xavier Porras on the opening drive of the second half.  Porras three yard touchdown run at the 8:04 mark with  the Casas PAT made it 10-0 Skins.  Liberal tipped a South pass which was caught at the Liberal one for first and goal.  But after losing a yard on first down and two yards on second down, Andy Nguyen jarred the ball loose and Gio Duran fell on the fumble.  It was 10-0 Skins after three.  South recovered an LHS fumble near midfield.  Zahmere Jackson hooked up with Jaeden Rosco for a 28 yard touchdown at the 7:36 mark.  The Redskins answered with a time eating drive resulting in a seven yard touchdown by Xavier Porras.  Wyatt Mannel’s two point conversion made it 18-6.

Liberal had 331 yards and Wichita South had 196 yards.  Xavier Porras had 27 carries for 167 yards and was Epic Touch Player of the Game.  Xavier Tafoya had four carries 97 yards.  Ayden Juarez had 13 tackles with two tackles for loss. Tyren Holmes had eight tackles with two for loss.  Xavier Tafoya had nine tackles with one for loss.

Wichita South is 1-1 and Liberal is 2-0.  The Redskins host Guymon for Kids Inc Night and Liberal Recreation Night Friday night at 7pm at Redskin Field.  Redskin Pre-game at 6pm on 1270 and 92.3.
