KSHSAA Covered wrote it. Liberal is one of the 6A soccer team’s to watch. Here is what the state publication says about the Angry Red.
“Liberal put together a 11-5-3 campaign and had one of the best victories on their resume of any team last season. Liberal defeated Dodge City 4-2 to end that team’s undefeated season, only for the Red Demons to get revenge with a 7-0 win over Liberal. Now the team returns senior forward Suain Moncayo leading the way.”
The Redskins have over 70 kids out for soccer which is the most interest there has been in the program. There are five starters returning. Carlos Ruiz enters his fourth season as head coach. Last year the Redskins were 11-5-3 winning their first regional since 2015 when they stormed into Derby and took a 2-0 win. The Skins were second in the WAC going 4-2-2.
Suain Moncayo is a senior. He has 44 goals in his career. Eduard Moreno netted 58 goals and holds the Redskin record. Mario Solis is second with 49 goals. Giezi Gonzalez returns for his senior season at center midfield. He was first team all WAC last year. Josh Garcia is a junior and plays midfield after a 2nd team all WAC season as a sophomore. Other keys players are Sr. goalkeeper Gael Ruvalcaba, Sr. midfielder Jayden Gonzalez, Jr. forward Johnny Young, Jr. back Aron Duque, and Sr. back Orlando Munoz.
The Redskins were back to their winning ways last year at 11-5-3. Ruiz is Liberal’s second ever coach. Lori Navarro was 9-4 in her last season of 2020. The program started in 1998 and compiled a 291-97-14 record with 22 winning seasons in the first 23 seasons. The Redskins have won the Western Athletic Conference 13 times, including 11 in a row at one time. Liberal won the state in 2011.
The Redskins were featured during Sportsguys on Friday morning.
