U.S. Postal Service officials say the service would save $1 million a year by moving mail processing out of Salina to Wichita.

Rick Pivovar of the U.S. Postal Service said the service has lost $19 billion recently and is considering consolidating more than 250 processing centers, including those in Hutchinson, Topeka, Liberal, Hays, Colby, Dodge City, Independence and Salina.

David James, of the America Postal Workers Union, said he considers the changes an attack on rural towns, which rely on local post offices.
