Willie Max Phelps, 80, of Liberal, passed away on January 4, 2022.
He was born on August 16, 1941 to Andrew and Myrtis (Wells) Phelps in Philadelphia, MS. He attended Longdale High School. On October 2, 1965 he married Ruth Duffin in Port Gibson, MS. Willie and Ruth lived in Liberal, Kansas.
Max’s most recent job was as a Bus Driver for the City of Liberal. He also worked for Beech Aircraft and Panhandle Eastern. He was a member of New Community Missionary Baptist Church and Black History Committee. He enjoyed gardening, collecting coins, horses, motorcycles, working out, watching westerns and animal shows. He also enjoyed taking the kids on long walks, his pets and listening to music.
Max is survived by his loving spouse of 56 years Ruth, Two Daughters, Maxine Phelps Carpenter of Beaver, OK, Stephanie Phelps Champagne of Duncanville, TX; Son, Brian Phelps and Wife Stephanie of Broken Arrow, OK; Five Grandchildren, Candace Goitia, Kiana Goitia, Jordan Phelps, Tierra Phelps, and Leilah Champagne; Six Great Grandchildren, Ileyah Ross-Goitia, Mekhi Goitia, Imauri Eikenberry, Ivilyss Chau, Monae Chau, and Ilijah Orozco; Sister Helen Wilson of Detroit, MI and many Nieces and Nephews.
He was preceded in death by Father, Andrew Phelps, Mother, Myrtis Phelps; Sister, Audrey Mae Baker; Brother Leroy Phelps, and Niece Kathy Temple.
There will not be a Visitation held.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 7, 2022, 1:00 pm at Bibleway Church of God In Christ. Services will be live streamed on Miller Mortuary’s Facebook Page.
Burial will take place at Liberal City Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the New Community Missionary Baptist Church in care of Miller Mortuary PO Box 826 Liberal, KS 67905-0826.
