William Mathies, age 67, of Walsh, Colorado, died Thursday, February 18, 2021, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born January 4, 1954, in Lamar, Colorado, the son of Raymond Stewart and Ann Marie (Kohout) Mathies.
William grew up on the farm near Two Buttes. He began his education at Two Buttes School and graduated at Walsh High School. William lived in Germany for a short time before settling down at the farm in Baca County. He loved being a farmer and rancher. He had a gentle soul, was a hard worker and good neighbor, always willing to help others. William enjoyed having family around during harvest and teaching his granddaughter to drive the grain cart. In the evenings, he would enjoy a Pepsi and Reese’s peanut butter cup. William’s constant companion was his dog, Peewee.
William is survived by his daughters, Heather Hinrichs and husband Brent of Johnson, and Brittny Mace of Cheyenne, Wyoming; sister, Diana Cleaver and husband William of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Kariss Kolman, Alex Carruth, Jensen Hinrichs, and Tattum Hinrichs; great-granddaughter, Maeleigh Carruth; five nieces, one nephew, six great-nieces, six great-nephews, and many friends.
William is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ann.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Johnson with Reverend Kurt Rovenstine officiating. Interment will follow at Stonington Cemetery. The funeral service will be live streamed on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Visitation will be Monday, February 22, 2021, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson.
