Virginia Louise (Shelton) Newhouse, 96, a longtime resident of Liberal, Kansas, passed away on February 9, 2017 at her home in Silver Elm Estates in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Virginia Louise Shelton was born in Liberal, Kansas, to Lester Shelton and Ethel Marie (Ideker) Shelton on June 14, 1920. She went to school in Liberal, Kansas and graduated third in her class from Liberal High School. She married Earl Benson Newhouse on December 20, 1940 in Ness City, Kansas. She worked at Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company in Liberal, Kansas, then in Kansas City, Missouri. Virginia loved spending time with her family, playing Yahtzee, eating popcorn and drinking Dr. Pepper. She loved to eat out (especially Mexican restaurants) and had a steady supply of Andes Mints or Russell Stover chocolates for after dinner. She always believed that no matter how full she was after a meal that there was always room in the “dessert compartment”. Virginia had a sweet tooth and treated herself to oatmeal raisin cookies every morning for breakfast! She was an extremely accomplished self-taught painter and enjoyed creating crochet, cross-stitch and embroidery projects for her family and friends. She cherished every moment with family and treasured those memories with beautiful photo displays throughout her home.

Virginia is preceded in death by husband Earl Benson Newhouse (September 30, 1903 – October 8, 1998), her son Jerrold Ray Newhouse (June 6, 1944 – April 13, 2011), grandson Michael Douglas Newhouse (November 24, 1973 – November 25, 1973), parents William Lester Shelton and Ethel Marie (Ideker) Shelton, Brother Bobby Shelton, and Sister Dorothy Shelton.
