Virginia “Garney” Lee (Patterson) Godfrey was born to Perry Arthur Patterson and Edna Ruth (Gordon) Patterson on February 27, 1940, in Topeka, Kansas. She passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023, in Ulysses, Kansas.
Virginia was one of seven children, and she was proud of the fact her daddy delivered her at home during a winter storm. She attended Topeka High School, lived in Johnson, Kansas from 1970 – 2005 and worked at Stanton County Hospital from 1973 – 2006 as a CNA, and Medication Aide. She moved to Ulysses in 2005 where she currently resided. Virginia also was a boy and girl scout leader for many years.
Virginia received her longtime nickname of “Garney” from her oldest granddaughter as she was unable to say grandma. Garney was a protestant Christian and loved the Lord and her kids and family with all her heart. There was nothing more important to her than these things. In her quiet time, she liked to read, cook, fish, watch John Wayne movies, and visit with family and friends. She had a love for skunks and cardinals and has quite a collection.
Virginia is survived by her five children, Wayne Lee Godfrey and wife, Diane, of Lakeland, Florida, Donald Lee Godfrey, Jr. of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Larry Dale Godfrey and wife, LaDawna, of Ulysses, Kansas, Cindy Ann Canny and husband, Steve, of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Rebecca Sue Whittington and husband, Vance, of Rye, Colorado; four siblings, Eleanor Ruth Calwell, Perry Arthur Patterson III, Linda Louise Berry, and Loretta Eilene Engler; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, Perry and Edna Patterson; siblings, Jon Eugene Patterson and Glenda Ann Laird; and grandchild, Brandt E. Daniels.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Scott Booker, and Hospice – Brenda, Gerry, Evelyn, Cindy and Roxanne.
She will be placed with her Daddy at a graveside service in Lyden, Kansas, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Catherine Hospice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880. Condolences
