Funeral Service: 2:00 PM, Saturday, July 09, 2011 at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Wayne Flanders officiating.

Interment: Ulysses Cemetery with Military Rites by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79.

Virgil Wayne Prophet, age 91, of Ulysses, Kansas died Monday, July 4, 2011 at Oak Tree Villas in Jefferson City, Missouri. He was born August 22, 1919 in Harper County, Oklahoma, the son of Samual Jones and Maud (Serviss) Prophet.

Virgil graduated from Buffalo High School in 1936 and worked 45 years in sales and business management in northwest Oklahoma and southwest Kansas. Employer’s included The Buffalo Community Creamery (a butter manufacturing and milk processing plant), Home Lumber & Supply Company of Ashland, Kansas and Mayo Sash & Door Company of Wichita, Kansas. Virgil resided and managed the lumber yards in Buffalo, Oklahoma, Coldwater, Kansas and Greensburg, Kansas before moving to Ulysses in 1964 to go to work for Ulysses Irrigation Pipe Company in counter and wholesale sales. Virgil retired in 1985. Virgil belonged to the Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79 in Ulysses, the Laverne Valley Masonic Lodge in Laverne, Oklahoma, past Master of Buffalo Masonic Lodge #381 in Buffalo, and 32nd Degree Mason. He was a 60 year member of the Grand Lodge of Oklahoma at Guthrie, Oklahoma and past member of VFW, Rotary and Lion Clubs. Virgil was one of five brothers who served in the military in World War II. He served in France, Germany, Japan and the Philippine Islands. On November 1, 1936 he married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Marie Story in Ashland, Kansas.

He is survived by two daughters, Vicki Caywood and husband Stanley of Jefferson City, Missouri, Sandra Barlow and husband Donald of Apache Junction, Arizona; one brother, John Prophet of Luther, Oklahoma; two sisters, Bernita Rogers of Dodge City, Kansas, Sheila Prophet of Edmond, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn on November 4, 1999 after 63 years of marriage; stepmother, Myrtle; six brothers, Vearl, Mearl, Alfred, Clifford, Cecil, Delbert; and one sister, Lillie Wilkinson.
