Vernon H. Schofield UPDATED

Vernon H. Schofield, age 83, of Ulysses, Kansas died Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Mount Hope Nursing Center in Mount Hope, Kansas. He was born April 3, 1931 in Scott County, Kansas, the son of William Arlo and Agusta Flora (Hebrew) Schofield.

Vernon attended grade school in Shallow Water. His family moved to Garden City in 1940. Vernon served in the United States Army during the Korean War in Japan. Vernon married Lillie M. Hayzlett on August 20, 1951 in Lakin, Kansas. He was a truck driver for over 40 years for Cities Service Gas Company. Vernon loved to do woodworking and playing a little golf. When he was younger he enjoyed bowling.

He is survived by his two daughters, Carolyn Spencer of Ulysses, Kansas, and Brenda Nielsen of Wichita, Kansas; brother, Andrew Schofield of Glendive, Montana; sister, Alice Grissom of Mt. Home, Arkansas; five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.

Vernon is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillie in 2008; daughter, Janet Marie Schofield; grandson, Jerimy Shelton; step-grandson, Jimmy Nielsen; great-grandson, Jonathan Adigwe; two brothers, and one sister.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses, Kansas with Pastor Gary Gregory officiating. Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas with military rites conducted by the Kansas Military Funeral Honor Guard. Friends may call from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to the Ulysses Animal Shelter in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
