Verna Ruth Hamm

Verna Ruth Hamm, 80, of Adams, Oklahoma passed away August 23, 2020 at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas.

Verna was born January 19th, 1940 in Meade County, daughter of Henry and Sarah Dick Classen.

Verna grew up in rural Meade County, with brothers and sisters, Allen, Wilmer, Arlene, and Lovella.

Graduated from Meade Bible academy, and shortly thereafter was united in marriage with Abie Hamm on July 18th, 1958, at Meade Country Church. A few years later, they made their permanent home in Adams, OK where they raised 4 sons, Rod, Terry, Lonnie, and Darren. Verna played an important role supporting the family farm and construction business, managing all bookkeeping and administrative functions.

She was a long-time member of Gospel of Grace church in Hooker, OK. One of Verna’s favorite ministries was playing piano, despite having severe arthritis in her hands. She played the piano at Church on Sundays for decades, and for other singing groups, spending many weeknights practicing. Missions were also very important to Verna and she served as the church’s mission treasurer and also taught Sunday school for many years.

Survived by her husband, Abie Hamm of the home, 4 sons, Rod of Hooker, OK, Terry of Denver, CO, Lonnie and Janet of London, UK, and Darren and Laura of Atlanta, GA; 2 brothers, Allen and Becky Classen of Liberal, KS, Wilmer and Verna Jean Classen of Newton, KS; 3 Grandchildren, Luke, Emily, and Nathan.

For most of her life, Verna battled rheumatoid arthritis, and in later years, many forms of cancer. Despite facing many adverse medical and physical challenges, Verna always remained selfless, thinking of others, and consistently kept a positive and upbeat spirit. She had worked with many doctors, who often referenced her as the “miracle lady”.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday August 27, 2020 at the Hooker Cemetery with Rev. Chris McFarland officiating.

Memorials are suggested to the Great Plains Christian Radio or the Voice of the Martyrs and may be left at Roberts Brothers Funeral Home.
