MEADE – Velva L. Berghaus, age 87, passed away Friday afternoon, July 19, 2019, at the Lone Tree Retirement Center, Meade, Kansas.
She was born July 11, 1932, at Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of Roy and Myrtle (Pennington) Fisher. As a young girl she lived on a farm north of Meade and attended school in a rural country school. She later attended the Meade school system from the sixth grade until her graduation from Meade High School in 1950. She later attended Kansas State University before completing cosmetology school in Dodge City.
In 1951, she married Jack Berghaus in Meade. They lived in California while Jack was serving in the Untied States Army. After his discharge, they moved back to Meade and began farming. Velva was a hairdresser until 1962, and then became a homemaker and stay-at-home Mom.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, dining out, dancing, and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Jack of Meade; two daughters, Becky Lathrop of Pratt, Kansas, and Sandy Bachman of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a brother, Donald Fisher of Garden City, Kansas; a sister Carol Burner of Redwood, California; six grandchildren, Lindsey, Katie, Matthew, Ryan, Clint, and Valerie; and four great-grandchildren, Collin, Avery, Erica, and Brantley.
She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Jimmy Fisher and Gene Fisher.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at the United Methodist Church, Meade. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade. Interment will follow the service in the Graceland Cemetery, Meade.
