Sondra Lee (Rogers) Bruner went to be with Jesus on August 6, 2015 at the age of 65. Sondra was born to Robert Lee and Jessi Pauline Rogers on March 13, 1950 in Bay City, TX. Sondra was the much younger sister (that’s what she like to say) of Betty Jean Smitherman and Jim Rogers. While growing up Sondra moved several times because her dad worked in construction.
Her mother and she settled in Kismet, KS where she finished high school and met the love of her life. Jay and Sondra were united in marriage on May 4, 1968 in Kismet, KS. Jay and Sondra then moved to Dodge City, KS where she earned an associate degree in business from Dodge City Community College
During the next three years she had Robin LeeAnn, Michael Jay and John David. They spent time in Houston and Elkhart and then in 1976 Jay and Sondra moved their family from Elkhart to a small farm just south of town. For the next 18 years Sondra learned how to milk a cow, raise chickens, deliver pigs and kill snakes (only with a pickup). She enjoyed raising huge gardens and canning. She also substitute taught for Yarbrough Schools and made wedding cakes along with being a talented seamstress.
In this time Sondra became a member of the Eva Community Church where she sang, taught Sunday school, served on numerous committee and helped build the still existing metal building that serves as the Eva Community Center. Pastor Sargent and Marjorie along with many other church members helped her grow into the Christian woman she was.
Upon returning to Elkhart in 1994 Jay and she became active members of the Church of God. She continued to serve in music ministry, lead bible study, teach Sunday school, serve on committees, hosted ladies tea and provide meals for many occasions. She was a gifted writer; her skits always had a message and touched those who saw them performed. Her intercession in prayer, teachings and discipleship of others have touched the lives of many. Sondra’s love for Christ and compassion for others will be remembered by all who met her.
In her later life she spent time working in the flower shop, Walrod Insurance and Gigot Irrigation.
Sondra loved her family and friends. She is proceeded in death by her father, Robert Roger; mother, Pauline, brother-in-law, Jerry Smitherman; father-in-law, John Bruner.
