Shirley Monroe, age 85, of Ulysses, Kansas died Thursday, April 07, 2011 at The Legacy at Park View in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born November 13, 1925 in Hutchinson , Kansas the daughter of Carol C. and Thelma (Harmon) Parks.
Shirley, a homemaker, lived in Ulysses, Ness City , Holly , Colorado and Hutchinson . On June 9, 1945 she married Earl R. Monroe Jr. in Maddison , Wisconsin . She was a proof reader for the Ulysses News. After retirement she worked at Kep’s Toggery in Ulysses. Shirley was a member of the Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Order of the Eastern Star #471, American Legion Auxiliary Post #79, and Sweet Adeline’s. She also sang at weddings and funerals for over 40 years.
She is survived by her two daughters, Marty Kirk of Burneyville, Oklahoma , Michelle Bultman and husband Mark of Ulysses, Kansas ; five grandchildren, Jodi Flores, Hattie Wiginton, Mark Bultman Jr., Marc Johnson, Melissa Cribb; and three great-grandchildren, Joshua Flores, Maison Wiginton and Aniston Wiginton.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl Monroe Jr.; son, Michael Monroe; brother, Harmon C. Parks; and grandson Michael Todd Black.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Bill Harrold and Pastor Kelly Gindlesberger officiating. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery . Friends may call Monday, April 11, 2011 from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to the Legacy at Park View or the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave , Ulysses , KS 67880 .
