Shirley A. Johnson

Shirley A. Johnson, age 78, of Ulysses, Kansas died Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born February 16, 1932 in Newkirk, Oklahoma, the daughter of Edward and Margaret (Weber) Komma.

Shirley grew up living at the Cities Service Camp east of Ulysses. She graduated from Satanta High School in 1950. She attended St. Catherine Hospital School of Nursing in Garden City for three years and graduated in 1953. On February 14, 1954, Shirley married Donald Eugene Johnson in Ulysses. She was a nurse in Ulysses for 52 years working at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Dr. Brewer’s Medical Clinic and Western Prairie Care Home, retiring in 2004. Shirley enjoyed watching KU basketball and NASCAR racing.

Survivors include one daughter, Therese Minks of Ulysses, Kansas; two sons, Michael E. Johnson of Tonganoxie, Kansas, Bret Johnson, of Ulysses, Kansas; one brother, Leroy Komma of Lawrence, Kansas; one sister, Kathleen McGillivray of Bella Vista, Arkansas; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald on April 27, 1967; and one sister-in-law, Loretta Komma.

Visitation: 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM, Monday, February 14, 2011 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses, Kansas.
Funeral Service: 10:00 AM, Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses with Reverend Trong Bing Tran officiating.
Interment: Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses, Kansas.

Vigil and rosary service will be held Monday, February 14, 2011 at 7:00 PM at the Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital Foundation in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
