Samuel “Vic” Victor Barbo

Samuel “Vic” Victor Barbo, age 97, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Saturday, February 10, 2024, at St. Catherine Hospital in Dodge City, Kansas. He was born June 6, 1926, in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, the son of Andy and Rose (DeBay) Barbo.

Vic grew up in Washington and at the age of 17 years enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during World War II as a ball turret gunner on a TBM Avenger. After an Honorable Discharge from the service, he came to Ulysses and began working in the oil field. He was the owner / operator for 57 years of Barbo Well Service, Inc. He married Millie Hickey on June 5, 1964, in Meade, Kansas. Vic served on the Ulysses City Council, was active in the Grace Lutheran Church, and Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79. He was a pilot, owned dirt track race cars for several years, enjoyed watching NASCAR, playing the lottery and sports betting. Vic could be found having coffee with his buddies at McDonald’s, was an avid fan of the KC Chiefs, OU, KU, and the Red Sox. He fondly cherished his time with his dog, Rambo.

Vic is survived by his wife, Millie, of the home; sons, Kevin Barbo and wife, Debra, of Ulysses, and Victor Barbo of Manhattan; daughters, Lorraine Barbo Anderson and Vicki Barbo both of Phoenix, Arizona; brother, Walt Barbo of Aurora, Colorado; sister, Marie Sims of Sedro-Woolley, Washington; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and special caregivers, Juanita De La Pena, Rosie Rivas, and Maria Gonzalez.

Vic is preceded in death by his parents, Andy and Rose Barbo; sisters, Alice Juckett, Evelyn McCormick, and Eleanor Poppe; son-in-law, Max Lee Anderson; and great-grandson, Brandon Barbo.

Funeral service will be Friday, February 16, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Oasis Church in Ulysses with Pastor Andy McMillan officiating. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery with military rites conducted by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79. Visitation will be Thursday, February 15, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with family present at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
