Sammy Ruth Bartley, age 88, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, at Wheatridge Park Care Center. Sammy was born March 2, 1935, in Guymon, Okla., to Hazel L. Johnson Davis and Samuel Davis.
She went to school in Guymon, Okla. After graduation, she attended and graduated from Panhandle State University, Goodwell, Okla., with a BS in education. She taught third grade at McKinley School for 13 years, then became the school librarian. After that, she went to Southlawn, where she was a teacher’s aide for many years. Her final stop in education was at South Middle School, where she retired in 1997.
She married Dallas Bartley on August 10, 1962, at Guymon, Okla. Dallas and Sammy helped raise her nephew, Sam Prather.
Sammy was active in school activities. She was a member of the Rebekahs and First Presbyterian Church. Sammy was an accomplished artist. She loved to paint. She and Dallas spent many hours playing dominoes and watching OU football. She loved cats and would feed every stray that came to her house.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dallas, her parents, her sister Helen, her nephew Sam, and her niece, Frankie.
She is survived by Pat, Chelsea, and Alex Prather, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., David Hoffman, Arizona, Pam Trusdale, Topeka, Kan., her friends and caretakers Jonice and Bob Oblander, Judy Shelman, Pauline Spohn and Annette Wilson.
She will be greatly missed.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, February 2, 2024, at the Hornung Family Funeral Home Chapel, 1212 West 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas. Pastor Rex Petty will conduct the service. Interment will follow at the Liberal Cemetery.
Memorials are requested to First Presbyterian Church of Liberal in care of the Hornung Family Funeral Home.
