Robert E. Young

Robert E. Young went to be with his Lord on December 15, 2011, at the age of 93.

He was born July 9, 1918, in Fowler, Kansas, to James and Elsie (Harvey) Young and attended the Fowler schools. After high school graduation he attended Friends University in Wichita while driving the city bus to pay his school tuition.

He married Mary Lorene Joy on August 9, 1940, and she passed away in 1979 at the age of 59. They lived in rural Fowler and were engaged in farming full time. Generations of families remember him fondly as their school bus driver since he was also employed with the Fowler schools for over 50 years.

He was a member of the Fowler Friends Church and later joined the Church of the Nazarene in Meade.

Their children are Roberta Young Babb, the late John Young, Wes Young (Carol), Robert Young II (Bridget), and a foster daughter Kim Boyle. There are thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Robert married Roberta Griffee Lee on April 13, 1988, adding two more children, Mike Lee (Rose) and Diana Parker (Lance), five additional grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren to his family.

Preceded in death were his first wife; parents; two brothers, Hershel and Irvin; a sister, Marcia; his eldest son, John; and two granddaughters, Carely and Karyn. He is survived by his brother, Ellsworth. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending great times with his family, square dancing, traveling, gardening, and making latch hook rugs as well as the more recent early morning coffee visits and activities with wonderful friends at the Mennonite Manor community where he and Roberta lived after their move to South Hutchinson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2011, at the Church of the Nazarene, Meade, with the Reverend Ron Willard presiding. Friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday and from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Monday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade. Interment will follow in the Fowler Cemetery, Fowler.

The family would welcome memorials to the Church of the Nazarene or the Mennonite Manor in care of the funeral home.
