Richard L. (Rich) Hensley

Richard L. (Rich) Hensley, age 83, of Ulysses, Kansas died Friday, March 20, 2015 at his home. He was born January 27, 1932 in Burden, Kansas the son of Merle E. and Viola Opal (Rotha) Hensley.

Richard grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas and graduated from Hutchinson High School. Richard served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force and then went to work for Boeing in Wichita, Kansas. In 1957 Richard moved to Ulysses, Kansas and went to work for Bill’s IGA. He worked for Bill’s IGA for 23 years and then went to work for Grant County Road and Bridge. After his retirement in 1994, Richard went to work for Wright Surveying. Richard was a member of the Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79 and received his 50 year member award. He was a member of the Coachman Camping Club from 1982-1999. He helped take tickets at the Grant County Home Products Dinner for many years and played town-team basketball. He was a blood donor and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

On May 7, 1954 he married Mary A. Massey; she survives.

Other survivors include one son; Mike Hensley of Ulysses, Kansas, two daughters; Shari Hensley of Ulysses, Kansas and Kathy Payton of Katy, Texas, one brother; Les Hensley and wife Marilyn of Hutchinson, Kansas, two sisters; Colleen Fry and husband Fay of Potwin, Kansas and Patti Phillips and husband Harley of Hutchinson, Kansas, one grandchild; Courtnie Brand and husband Buddy and one great-grandchild; Braylie.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, one brother; Dean Hensley and one sister; Bonnie Werries.

Funeral service will be held Monday, March 23, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Sam Bynum presiding. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery, Ulysses, Kansas with military rites by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79. Friends may call on Sunday, March 22, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, Kansas. Family requests memorials be given to the ASPCA, the American Stroke Foundation or the American Cancer Society all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, Kansas 67880.
