Richard Charles Schaffer, owner of Rick’s Hair Design and barber of 47 years died Saturday February 18, 2012, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE, after battling amyloidosis, a blood disorder, for two years.
Rick was born on August 21, 1946, in Hays, Kansas, to Otis Charles Schaffer and Marjory Jean (Eads) Schaffer Hubert. He graduated from Oakley High School in 1964 and Wichita School of Barbering in 1965. He married his high school sweetheart, Joellen Fechner on December 12, 1965, in Oakley Kansas. He worked at the Pratt Barber Shop in Oakley until moving his small family to Liberal in 1966. He worked for Jim Sutherland at the Esquire Barber Shop. He had two children Shannon Charles and Trisha Jo and was very proud of all their accomplishments. He purchased Ray & Bennie’s barber shop in 1973, where he barbered with his brother, Ernie for 38 years. He loved his customers their stories, their discussions and has missed them so much since he had to retire due to illness. He loved cars. He bought and sold countless cars over the years and he could describe every one to you. His pride and joy was a 1965 Corvette that he lovingly restored over 5 years. He took it to area car shows and won many trophies. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was learning the game of golf. He loved his family and his life.
He was so proud of his seven grandchildren: Matthew Schaffer, Michael Schaffer, and Jack Schaffer of Omaha, NE; Cully Simpson, Jesse Simpson, Trey Simpson and Brenna Simpson of Raymore, MO.
He is survived by three brothers: Terrell Schaffer of Dallas, TX, Ernie Schaffer of Liberal, Todd Schaffer of Atlanta, GA and a sister Karla Schaffer of Cave Creek, AZ, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
We will have a celebration of life service at the First Christian Church, 920 N Jordan, Liberal, KS on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the First Christian Church.
